Cladadgh Bodhráns "Notch" Bodhrán pn Drivetime interview.

For those asking, the bodhrán I played on the Drivetime interview is a Michael Vignoles from Claddagh Bodhráns,"notch" design. It's a 16" tunable bodhrán with long tuning keys, and a "notch" cut out at each key for ease of tuning. It has a reddish rim and is generally a lovely lightish, responsive drum. I think even as background it really stands out and I'm delighted so many people liked the sound of it!

Other drums we stock include more Claddagh ones, a full range from 12" packages up to professional level tunable 18" ones; Paraic McNeela ranges from an excellent 14" and 16" student package up to professional deep rimmed and tunable; malachy kearns and First Island bodhráns, and Paul McAuley Bodhráns, all excellent options.

Fame at Last: Charlie on Italian TV this summer

Well Charlie himself will be interviewed on Italian TV soon; he's no stranger to print and radio interviews although this may be his first TV one. Some favourite interviews over the years have included one he did for the students in Rathmines College of Commerce, a radio documentary for Lyric FM on buying a first violin and a wonderful print interview, later part of a book Trade Names , by Rose Doyle for the Irish Times.

We are looking forward now to seeing what the Italian interview is like and what they are looking for! Details will be shared as we find them out.

What makes the Strad so Special?

Very interesting BBC article online
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13856203

We often get asked if the violin someone has found in the attic is a Strad. Often the fact that the instrument is old and has a label marked "fecit anno domini 17XX" with mentions of Cremona, has the excited owner convinced it's the real and genuine article.
Sadly this is (to date) not the case. We may yet find that one of these instruments is indeed the product of the great master but so far, no; they are almost uniformly Victorian handmade or factory hand crafted copies. The rest may be slightly older or more modern. Some are fiendishly clever - right down to the fake "reduction" of the neck as if to imply it was originally a strad period length. Others are shiny and glossy and not even of stradivarian dimensions.

Many of the instruments labelled Stradivarius are not bad violins. They are decent, middle range instruments sometimes worth 2-3,000e depending on the standard of making involved. Many are quite standard instruments but again comparable to a well made handmade modern one around 7-1000e and some are dreadful. The label is not always a trick to defraud; it was perfectly understood that it meant "in the manner of" or "a copy of" a strad. Concepts of copyright and ownership were different and it is really a product of the twentieth century to assume that a label means authenticity.

In the end there are few strads and although one or two may well be discovered it is a little unlikely that great aunt Mary's old fiddle is one, no matter what the label says. However if you like the instrument and the sound is worth the asking price (the only true estimation of an instrument's real worth) then enjoy it. And maybe dream a little that the great man's hands did indeed fashion it, many moons ago.

It's Eurovision time again !

OK I know for some people this is the equivalent of admitting you like to torture kittens but I love the Eurovision. We all do here at Charlie Byrne's. We even have a Eurovision claim to fame ; a Double bass belonging to us was borrowed by a Finnish entrant (or was it Norwegian??) back in the early nineties, and said bass duly appeared on the hallowed stage of the Song Contest.

Much to my husband's disquiet, we gather in the appointed living room, make lists of the acts and grade them according to their musical and entertainment value (the two often don't actually crossover at all. The ones who can't sing often win the entertainment award!)

I see it in much the same light as jousts of old, or gladiatorial festivities. All those hopes and dreams wrapped up in national tribal pride! Strategic voting that reflects generations of politics and even warfare. The way Britain apologises for the Famine each year by giving us at least ten and sometimes 12 points. The way we respond by grudgingly awarding 8 (forgiven, not forgotten you understand.)

In recent years the advent of eastern block voting, literally, has ruined some of the fun but since Lordi's triumphant pyrotechnic dismantling of the Eurovision cliché there's been a bit of a return to quirky unique and less predictable patterns of wins and losses.

This year Jedward go forth in our name, a two-headed threat to european stability, our revenge for sending in the baliffs. Lipstick is...a catchy production number. It's not Dana warbling about all kinds of everything that's for sure. But they perform it with verve and energy and hopefully they'll give us the holy grail of finals...one with us in it!

If we win, then I'll know the 80s have made a complete comeback. Recession, unexpected sports victoris and Eurovsion coming to Dublin.

New TItles from Cork University Press

I've long been a supporter of Cork University Press and the proud owner of some fine publications from them. The newest brochure contains two publications that will be of great interest to mucisians, so I thought I'd share a heads up here about them.

The first is Fintan Vallely's Companion to Irish traditional Music 2nd edition; while not precisely new it is significantly expanded and has "much new information, including material never before printed and unavailable elsewhere." Vallely is a lecturer and coordinator in Traditional Music Studies at Dundalk Institute of Technology. The Companion gives an A-Z coverage of song, tunes, style, compositions, storytelling, technology and much more. It costs €59 from CUP which is a decent price considering the Bunting Collection alone costs almost as much. I would highly recommend it.

The second is Irish Blood, English Heart - Second Generation Irish Musicians in England by Sean Campbell. This is "the first full account of second-generation Irish music-making in England" and contains original interviews with Shane McGowan, Cait O'Riordan, Keven Rowland and Johnny Marr. Campbell is senior lacturer and research convenor in the Dept of English and Media at Anglia Ruskin UNiversity, UK. €39 from CUP.

Check out Cork University Press for more details (and browse the rest of their publications, if you've any interest in Ireland, folklore, music etc)

Saturday morning storytelling at Accents cafe

If any of our customers with kids are in town on a Saturday morning Accents cafe right next door to us (Dublin's very own late opening tea / coffee shop!) holds a storytelling session at 10.30am.
I can personally recommend the cake and coffee at Accents - god help my waistline. The huge sofas and beanbags downstairs are soooo comfy you won't want to leave..
So if you're planning on coming into us on a Saturday morning why not coincide with the storytelling next door and you can shop in peace for a while :)
